The assignment
The site had accumulated two decades of unrehabilitated benches, and the closure provision on the balance sheet was growing faster than the mine plan could absorb. Our brief was to make rehabilitation a routine operating activity rather than an end-of-life event.
We sequenced the closure design against the mine plan so that each exhausted bench was reshaped, capped with stockpiled topsoil and planted within the same season it was released. Species selection came out of eighteen months of on-site trials rather than a generic seed mix.
Groundwater, dust and noise monitoring ran throughout, giving the client a defensible evidence base for its annual regulatory returns and a measurable reduction in its closure provision.
