Treating mine rehabilitation as an operating activity

Progressive rehabilitation lowers closure liability, spreads cost and produces better ecological outcomes than a single end-of-life programme.

Deferring rehabilitation concentrates both cost and risk at the point where a mine has the least revenue to fund it, and where topsoil salvaged years earlier has usually lost its seed bank and structure.

Sequencing reshaping and planting against the mine plan means each bench is rehabilitated with fresh topsoil in the correct season, using species that have been trialled on site rather than selected from a catalogue.

The financial effect is measurable: a credible progressive programme with monitoring evidence behind it directly supports a reduction in the closure provision carried on the balance sheet.
