Designing effluent treatment on real loads, not nameplate figures

Plants sized from process design capacity rather than measured effluent routinely underperform within two years. Characterisation is cheaper than retrofit.

Nameplate production figures rarely reflect what actually arrives at a treatment works. Shift patterns, cleaning cycles and seasonal product mix produce peaks that a design based on annual averages will not absorb.

A four-to-six week characterisation programme sampling across shifts and cleaning cycles gives a defensible design basis, including the diurnal and weekly peaking factors that determine balancing tank volume.

The cost of characterisation is a small fraction of the cost of retrofitting a plant that cannot meet its discharge licence — and it materially strengthens the compliance case if a discharge is ever queried.
